District play began for the Little League Softball 8-9-10 year-old division on Friday, as Bristol and New Britain opened the double-elimination tournament from Wallingford’s Pragemann Park.
Bristol’s Haley Powers and Stella Sirianni combined to throw a no-hitter, as Bristol beat New Britain by mercy rule, 16-0.
Every Bristol player had multiple hits in the first game of the tournament. Cleanup hitter Lyla Wegiel led the team offensively, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored.
Maria Albert and Haley Powers both reached base safely three times, scoring three runs apiece.
Meredith Creamer and Madeline Milkowski each doubled in the second inning, while Abby Corbin, Breyona Demora and Mya Steiner each went 2 for 3, combining for three runs scored to give the girls from Bristol a commanding 16-0 lead, and advancing them to the second round of the tournament.
On Saturday, Bristol (1-0) faced Wallingford (1-0) in the second round of the tournament.
Wallingford and Bristol each scored runs early in the contest, before Wallingford began to pull away, scoring three runs in the third inning to give them a 7-2 lead heading into the top of the sixth.
Bristol then exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-7 lead.
Bristol’s Demora took command in the bottom of the sixth inning and benefited from a strong defensive sequence involving Corbin, Powers and Sirianni.
With a runner on first, catcher Corbin threw down to second to prevent the Wallingford runner from stealing second base. With the runner returning back to first, shortstop Powers turned and threw to first baseman Siranni, who tagged the runner out.
Demora struck out the Wallingford batter on the next pitch and retired the following batter by strikeout to end the game.
Bristol (2-0) advanced to the District 5 championship game on Monday.
On Monday, Bristol Girls Little League Softball (2-0) played Wallingford (2-1) for the 8-9-10 year old District 5 championship.
The game began much like the previous game ended. Demora was on the mound for Bristol and began the game with a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two of the first three batters.
Four of the first five Bristol hitters scored in the bottom of the first inning, giving Bristol a lead they would never relinquish.
Bristol’s offense was led by second baseman Albert (2 for 4 with two doubles), shortstop Powers (2 for 2 with three runs scored, and a bases clearing triple), and right fielder Lyla Wegiel (1 for 2, with two runs scored, and a bases clearing triple of her own).
Bristol sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning to break the game wide open, scoring eight runs on five extra base hits and five walks.
Demora (2 for 2, with a double and a run scored) recorded 10 strikeouts in four innings on the mound as Bristol (3-0) defeated Wallingford (2-2) by mercy rule, 13-1 in four innings to claim the city’s first 8-9-10 year-old district championship since 2015.
