Bristol Sports Hall of Fame honors scholar-athletes in 23rd annual ceremony

Sunday night was the occasion for the 23rd annual Bristol Sports Hall of Fame Jack Hines Scholar-Athlete Ceremony. Because of Covid restrictions, the event was held in a virtual ceremony on-line in lieu of the annual dinner.

One hundred and nineteen juniors and seniors from the three city high schools attained the distinction of being named. In order to qualify, a student has to maintain an overall average of 90 or a 3.7 GPA for their entire academic career, and also earn at least three varsity letters.

One of the highlights of the evening was the naming of this year’s recipients of the Joe McGinn Award, who is remembered for his positive attitude and fearlessness. This year’s recipients, Brandon Bianca and Kyle Santos, were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the athletic program at Bristol Central.

The student speaker this year was Gwen Torreso, a senior at Bristol Central. She spoke eloquently about the importance of athletics in her life and the need to keep academics at the forefront of high school athletes’ priorities.

At the end of the ceremony, six students, two from each high school, were awarded $1,500.00 college scholarships. To qualify, each student had to submit an application which included a personal essay and letters of recommendation.

From Bristol Central, Jenna Lowe received the Leary Family Memorial Scholarship, and Christopher Osuch received the Alfred Greenleaf Memorial Scholarship.

From Bristol Eastern, Amber Champagne and Tyler Martin both received the Christopher Calnan Memorial Scholarship.

And from Saint Paul Catholic High School, Sophia Gerst received the Brian Farrell, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, and Nina Zwolinski received the Roberge Family Scholarship.
