In a contest much closer than the final score indicates, Bristol Eastern defeated Newington in volleyball Monday night in three straight sets.

The newly nicknamed Nor’Easters gave the Lancers tough battles all through the evening, but Eastern always had what it took to salt each set away when the going got tight.

In the first set, Eastern led most of the way, but the Newington team stayed close right till the end, with the Lancers finally winning 25-19.

The second set was the best of the night. Newington jumped out to an early lead, and they held on to it for almost the entire set. But the Lancers roared back, fueled on by a raucous student cheering section, and pulled even and eked out the set by sweeping the last few points, with a 26-24 second set result.

Eastern had the best of the third set, but again Newington hung tight, losing 25-21.

In a very warm Lancerdome, the Eastern girls celebrated their hard-fought victory.
