Robert E. Poland, 84, widower of Shirley Poland and Patricia Poland, died on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Amberwoods, Farmington.
Robert was born on Dec. 17, 1936, in Bristol and was a son of the late Thomas Clive Poland, Sr. and Gertrude (Ennis) Poland. He was raised and graduated from high school in Bristol before enlisting to serve in the United States Marine Corps. After his Marine service, he settled into a career with the United States Army retiring as a Master Sergeant after 22 years of service.
Robert is survived by two children: Dawn Mendez and husband, Thomas of Bristol, and Thomas Poland of Homer, Ark; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and Patricia’s family: son, Bruce Sprague and wife Theresa of Plymouth; daughters: Laurie Gondek and husband Stephen of Avon, Lisa Suter and husband Todd of Greenville, S.C.; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings: Sgt. Thomas “Buddy” Poland, Millie D’Antonio, and Patricia Conklin.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Family and friends may visit between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol. A prayer service will commence at 11 a.m. followed by burial with military honors in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol.
