St. Paul baseball finishes a perfect regular season, defeats Watertown 16-1

Baseball

St Paul completed a perfect 20-0 regular season with a 16-1 win over Watertown Thursday afternoon.

Brendan Foley picked up his eighth win of the season for the Falcons, pitching 4 shutout innings with 10 strikeouts. Along with teammate Jamie Leggett, the Falcon pitchers limited Watertown to 2 hits and 1 unearned run. Starter Ian Glover took the loss for Watertown.

After Foley retired the side in order to start the game, the Falcon offense scored 6 in the bottom of the frame. Devin Kulas led off with a single and came in to score the first run when Mario Izzo tripled to left. Casey Cerruto singled home Izzo and advanced to 3rd when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Cerruto scored when Joey Tonnotti’s long fly ball to center was dropped; Tonnotti took 3rd on the play. Then a throwing error on Steve Morelli’s ground ball allowed Tonnotti to score making it 4-0. Morelli advanced to 3rd on Jamie Leggett’s single, and came in to score on Jonathan Remillard’s SAC fly to center. Cal Chance followed with a single. Then Kulas doubled driving in Leggett to make it 6-0. That would be all the cushion the Falcons needed.

St Paul added 1 in the bottom of the 2nd when Morelli tripled after Tonnotti walked, and that made it 7-0.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, St Paul pounded out 7 hits and took advantage of 4 walks to blow the game open. Ryan Daniels and Casey Cerruto each had 2 hits and 2 RBIs while Tonnotti, Morelli, and Chance had RBI singles. St Paul led 16-0 after 4 innings.

Watertown scored its run in the top of the 5th. Sam Weidimier led off the inning with a single. With 1 out, Jack McCloskey grounded into what looked like a game ending double play. But the ball was thrown away allowing Weidimier to go to 3rd. Weidimier scored on Vincent Tanganelli’s SAC fly to right, and the final was 16-1.
