Parks and Rec completes next phrase of community garden project on boulevard

Volunteers gathered on Veterans Memorial Boulevard this past weekend to plant trees and shrubs as part of the Urban Garden project on the first Community Planting Day, sponsored by Bristol Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services (BPRYCS).

Once finished the Urban Garden will include 21 native trees and over 40 shrubs that will “infiltrate storm water, improve air quality and reduce ambient temperatures” in the immediate area, according to a Linked In post by Dr. Joshua Medeiros, BRPYCS superintendent.

A grant from the Connecticut Urban Forest Council in cooperation with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Division of Forestry and funded by the regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative makes the project possible.

The Urban Garden is slated to open in the spring of 2023.

Latest COVID-19 stats

For the past seven days, Bristol’s COVID-19 positivity rate is 5.6 percent down from 9.5 percent with 33 postive cases down from 59 positive cases the previous week, leaving the city in the red category with over 15 cases per 100,000 people. Hartford County is in the medium category.

The CDC recommends that people at high risk for severe illness, talk to their healthcare provider about whether to need to wear a mask and take other precautions. In addition, the CDC reminds people to take the following measures:

  • Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines
  • Get tested if you have symptoms
  • People may choose to mask at any time. People with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access eight (8) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access eight (8) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
