Leonard Cannon, Jr., 84

Leonard H. Cannon, Jr., 84, beloved husband of Joyce (Krar) Cannon, died on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Ingraham Manor. Leonard was born in New Britain on March 8, 1938, and was the oldest of six children of the late Leonard H. Cannon, Sr. and Virginia (Hahn) Cannon.

He was raised in East Berlin where he was active in scouting and attained the Eagle Scout rank. He served in the United States Marine Corps then worked for two decades running the family business, Cannon Caterers. He became a Friend of Bill W. and realized he could help others by going to Tunxis Community College where he received a degree in drug and alcohol counseling. He worked as a counselor for Community Partners in Action in Hartford and others before retiring, making a significant impact across our community.

Having to keep busy in retirement, he drove limousines and busses and could be found scrapping junk metal throughout the community. He was a Yankees and Giants fan, an avid cyclist, outdoorsman, world traveler and was a recent member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Forestville. On Feb. 21 he would have celebrated 49 years of sobriety and would have done so with a smile and a story.

In addition to his wife of 59 years, Leonard is survived by three sons: Leonard H. Cannon, III and wife, April of Bristol, Mark Cannon and wife, Holly of Burlington, and Craig Cannon and wife, Deborah of San Antonio, Texas; a sister: Kathleen Carlson of Woodstock; nine grandchildren:  Leonard Cannon and fiancée, Kaitlyn Shemitz of West Haven, Nathan Cannon and wife, Jadyn of Louisville, Colo., Tyler Cannon, Olivia Cannon, Olivia, Sabrina, and Summer Settembri, Nicholas and his fiancée, Justine McColley of San Antonio, Texas, Joshua Cannon and girlfriend Arielle Briones of San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters: Virginia Olander, Janice Lincoln, and Laura Krug, and a brother: Thomas Cannon.  Pop made a huge impact on everyone he encountered and will be greatly missed by all.

Relatives and friends may call at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, on Friday, Feb. 10, between 5 and 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 90 Church Ave., Bristol.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or the Bristol Recovery Club. Please visit Leonard’s memorial website at www.FunkFuneralHome.com.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access eight (8) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access eight (8) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
