This past week, the Bristol Central boys track and field squad squared off against two CCC South opponents, coming away with a couple big wins.
The Rams rolled Middletown (94-56) in Bristol on Tuesday while Central downed Platt on Thursday (113-36) in Meriden – moving to 3-0 on the campaign.
Competition wise, Central has not battled against an equal opponent this spring in CCC South engagements.
Against the Rams, the Blue Dragons hung in there – taking several of the short distance sprinting events but in the end, it was too much Central with its depth and athletic ability coming to the forefront.
The Rams took first place in two of the three relay events against the Blue Dragons.
Central’s 4×800 relay squad of Patrick Wininger, Julieen Lopez, Chris Roy, and Lance Archibald won in 9:45 while the 4×400 event saw the grouping of Rowan Hennessey, Wininger, Frankie Porrini, and Lopez seize victory in 3:50.
Porrini was a triple winner that day, seizing top billings in both the 800 meters (2:07.8) and one mile (4:27.6) events.
In the two mile race, Roy nabbed first place in 11:12.
And senior Tre Blair swept the jumping events which included the high (five feet, four inches), long (22 feet, 6.25 inches) and triple (43 feet, 4.5 inches) jump events.
“[The] Bristol Central boys are 2-0 and have had some outstanding performances early in the season,” said Central coach Tamara Stafford. “Tre Blair has already smashed a very strong triple jump record and is moving in on the long jump record. Frankie Porrini looks strong early on and the distance crew of Wininger, Roy, and Archibald have been strong. Youngsters Julieen Lopez and Aiden Georgakopoulos are getting stronger every day.”
The hurdling events didn’t have any surprise finishers as Logan Jackson swept both races.
He finished the 110 hurdles in 16 seconds flat and took the 300 in 43.5 seconds.
In the field, Central’s Aengus Repeta cleared a toss of 110 feet, three inches in the discus and in the javelin, Wyatt Gibson won the event with a heave of 126 feet, two inches.
And in the end, it was a tremendous victory for the local contingent.
“In the throws, Wyatt Gibson, Tashawn Cauley, and Aengus Repeta have really stepped up,” said Stafford-Kirk. “Logan Jackson has been sensational in the hurdles and is leading a strong group to back him up. Jude Browning looks great in the pole vault early on as well. We’ve had some early injuries in the sprints, but our guys always step up when it’s needed.”
And then against Platt this past Thursday, it was more of the same.
The Rams allowed the Panthers just 36 points, nearly seizing every first place tally in Meriden.
The team swept all three relays with Porrini, Aiden Georgakopoulos, Landon Sisson, and Lopez taking the 4×800 in 9:21.
The combination of Anthony Paulino, Jimmy Cantarero, Jackson, and Blair won the 4×100 (45.79 seconds) and in the 4×800, Rowan Hennessey, Wininger, Aiden Georgakopoulos, and Lopez won in 3:44.
Hennessey seized the win in the 400 meters (55.21 seconds), Lopez snared the winning time in the 800 event (2:07.4) while Wininger took first place in the 1600 (4:44).
Roy hustled out the victory in the 3200 meters (10:56) and Jackson cashed in on both hurdle events (16.35 seconds in the 110 and 45.01 seconds in the 300).
Browning cleared 10 feet, six inches in the pole vault, Tashawn Cauley won the shot put (38 feet, 10 inches) and Repeta nearly cleared 125 feet in the discus (124 feet, 10 inches) for the win.
Gibson’s toss of 130 feet won him the javelin, and is it any real surprise that Blair swept the jumping events again?
Blair cleared five feet, six inches in the high jump, nabbed his best leap of 20 inches, 5.25 inches – good for first place the long jump – and he cleared 42 feet, 11 inches for the winning mark in the triple jump.
