Flood waters consume Barnes Field and tear up roadway on Route 229 bridge

Torrential rains swept across Bristol Sunday, leading to localized flooding. The heavy rains caused the Pequabuck River to spill its banks on Broad Street in Forestville and throughout Bristol. Several streets were also closed hours after flood water began to subside.

Receding floods waters revealed substantial damage to the bridge at the intersection of Rts. 229 and 72. Gov. Ned Lamont is expected to survey damage statewide, including a stop at on Rt. 229 later this afternoon.

The waters swallowed up the infield and outfield on Barnes Field with the water rising to the level of the dugout seats.

A little more than a mile away, Stafford Avenue, near the entrance to Sherman Park development, resembled a river with the waters rushing down the street.

Mayor Jeffrey Caggiano took to Facebook several times showing conditions around town and advised residents not to underestimate the power of running flood waters.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
