Marie Mae Martel, 85

Marie Mae Martel, 85, of Bristol, widow of Roland A. Martel, died on Thursday, July 20, in her home surrounded by family.

Marie was born on May 1, 1938, in St. Quentin, New Brunswick, Canada, and was a daughter of the late Joseph and Suzanne (Michaud) Castonguay. She was raised in St. Quentin where she graduated high school. Marie then moved to Bristol, where she has lived most of her life.  

A devout Catholic, she enjoyed visiting the Nursing Care Center of Bristol (The Pines) to recite the rosary with residents for 49 years, bringing joy to the many people she encountered.  She was a parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Church, Bristol, and was a member of the Ladies of St. Ann Society and Army of Mary. She also enjoyed cooking for her friends and family.

Marie Mae is survived by her four children, Tammy Niman and husband, Michael of Bristol, Donald Martel and wife, Beth of Harwinton, David Martel and wife, Susan of Harwinton, and Julie Testa and husband, Steve of Cromwell; three siblings: Evelyn Page of Bristol, Blanche Castonguay of Florida, and Maurice Castonguay of Canada; nine grandchildren: Nicholas Niman, Stephanie Niman and fiancé, Brendan Hotchner, Karley, Jamie, Andrea, Alise Martel, Hailey Hurlock and husband, Tyler, and Sophia and Cameron Testa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by siblings: Leo, Reno, Gerard, Benoit, Camille, Castonguay, Theresa Michaud, Rose Hebert, and Roland LaMarche. 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29, at 9 a.m. from Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave, Bristol to St. Gregory the Great Church, 235 Maltby St., Bristol for a Mass of Christian Burial celebration at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, 522 Terryville Ave., Bristol.
