Bristol Central girls cross country squad tops Bristol Eastern in competitive CCC South showdown

By Michael Letendre

MANCHESTER — The Bristol Central girls cross country squad got a measure of revenge against Bristol Eastern at the CCC South championship from Wickham Park in Manchester on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams nabbed a fourth-place finish with 94 points, just sneaking by the Lancers (98) over another close battle.

Plainville won the race with 33 points, Berlin (60) was a distant runner-up and Maloney (89) nabbed third place.

Gianna Rodriguez (21:22.2) won the race while teammate Oliwia Marecik (21:44.2) came in second for the Blue Devils.

But two harriers from Bristol made top-15 splashes.

Eastern sophomore finished in ninth place at 22:42.8 while Central senior Katie Tran (23:23.5) ended her final CCC bout in style.

“Senior Captain Katie Tran stepped up and led the girls team today to reach their goal of beating BE after losing to them in the City Championship last week,” said Central coach Tamara Stafford-Kirk.

Also for the Rams, Emersyn Mazzei (24:00.1), Sophia Stark (24:57.5), Lynae Lewis (26:14.4), Johannie Juarez (26:16.8) and Ruth Smith (27:54.9) all made gains on the course.

Eastern had a great day behind Gonzalez as the group managed to finish the campaign at .500 overall.

“[The] girls placed fifth in the CCC South and finished the season with a 6-6 record,” said Paul Ryskowski. “Kaelyn Gonzalez led the Lancers finishing 9th overall in the CCC South Division. Kam Meyer, Lauren Ayotte, and Calliope Gallagher all had strong races as well.”

Meyer (25:10.9), Ayotte (25:26.3) and Calliope Gallagher (25:41.2) all did well at Wickham.

Rounding out the day for the Kingstreeters were Rita Gao (26:04.9), Grace Steck (26:58.9), Brooklynne Whitlock (28:15.3) and Princess Priscilla Dilone (29:07.6).

“These girls came a long way since last year,” said Ryskowski. “I’m proud of how far they’ve come and I’m excited for what’s next.”

On Saturday, the state holds its annual championship races while the State Open commences on Nov. 3. Both those exciting events take place from Wickham Park.
