Being able to ring the old brass bell after the Thanksgiving Day football battle between Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern is always a treat.
And it’s not just about ringing a bell after the game.
That bell gets to sit in the victors trophy case for the entire year and it’s been in Central’s possession since 2015.
However, the game also awards offensive and defensive awards – a tradition that was started in 1996.
The Thomas R. Monahan Player of the Game Awards are given to four players, two apiece from Central and Eastern on offense and defense. 9
However, there’s always the possibility of multiple award winners – spanning multiple years.
Some of the players have earned multiple awards over the years and this Thursday, Eastern’s Jaiden Fore (2022 Offensive Player of the Game) and Central’s Anthony Paulino (2022 Defensive Player of the Game) can defend those honors and earn them again.
There’s a very good chance of that coming to pass in this year’s showdown.
Here’s a look at every Battle for the Bell Offensive and Defensive Player of The Game award winners, starting with the first awards handed out in 1996 (those awards are voted for by the media):

All TBE readers, supporters and donors
The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.
- Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
- Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
- Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.
Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
