Bristol Thanksgiving stories you probably, in all likelihood, never heard

1890, two children, a boy, 9, and a girl, 8, from Southington, are headed to Waterbury for Thanksgiving. They are separated from their travel companions at the Plainville Station. In a panic, they board two separate trains, one being a freight train and end up in Bristol.

Both were scared out of their wits, but a resourceful conductor, Conductor Beers reunited all the parties later that morning.

All the stores were closed on Thanksgiving Day in 1902 except the drug stores, but they closed at 1 p.m. Both banks and the library were closed too, but the reading room remained open. The post office closed at noon.

Thanksgiving morning in 1899, Patrick O’Leary was mighty intoxicated. So much so that he was arrested and brought before Judge Newell that afternoon. Mr. O’Leary was charged with drunkenness, found guilty, and paid the $2 fine.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
