Bristol Eastern came out on fire in their opening tournament game against Shelton Tuesday night, using a full court press to create multiple steals and offensive opportunities.
The Lancers, led by Vanessa Drury and Autumn Udoh, poured in 32 points in the first quarter alone, and the game was never in doubt after those first eight minutes. Eastern jumped out to a 19-0 lead over first four or five minutes of play. Shelton called two time outs to try to stem the tide but had no anwers for the Lancer onslaught.
Udoh had 14 points in the first quarter, and was basically unstoppable. And Drury scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half, including 3 three’s in the second quarter to put the final nails in the Shelton coffin.
The game was so one-sided that Eastern Coach Tony Floyd was relatively quiet during the contest, a shocking development to all Eastern fans in attendance. And the Lancer subs got to play substantial minutes.
Cassie Sward added 13 points to the Lancer ledger, including 3 three’s of her own.
Eastern was ranked #8 in the first round match, while Shelton was #25.
Eastern will now play Amity High School on Fri night at 6:30 at BE. Amity, ranked # 9, defeated Wilby, 60-39 on Tuesday night.
All TBE readers, supporters and donors
The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.
- Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
- Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
- Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.
Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
