Avon edges Eastern in girls lacrosse, 11-8, Tuesday night

The Bristol Eastern girls lacrosse team continued its extended home stand against Avon Tuesday night. The result was a close game where every goal and literally every second counted. Avon held on for an 11-8 triumph over the Lancers in a game that Eastern was in to the final horn.

Avon took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter both teams traded goals and Eastern seemed to have a one goal deficit going into the half after a free shot goal by Emma Stavens with 10 seconds in the quarter.  However Avon won possession and ran down the field to score as time expired for a 5-3 lead. There was some discussion about whether the goal should count as the ball has to enter the goal before the horn but it appeared the Avon player released the ball but it didn’t clear in time.

In the 3rd quarter it was a 7-6 Avon lead as time wound down and Avon yet again scored a last second goal to go up 8-6 entering the 4th.

The game finished with an 11-8 Avon win as the teams traded goals in the 4th period.

Erin Martin came up with several spectacular saves in goal ending the game with 8 in total.

Emma Stavens had five goals and Vanessa Drury three to complete the Lancers’ tally for the game. Drury also came up with seven crucial ground balls as possession was critical.

Meg Krok and Jayna Hatcher again played great on-ball defense with Gabby McLay playing great help D. Leah Roy contributed all over the field with great D and hustle plays.

The loss drops Eastern under .500 with a record of 5-6.

The Lancers play next on Friday, hosting Wethersfield at 5:30.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
