BE baseball splits two games on Monday and Tuesday against Wethersfield and Lewis Mills

Eastern had a regularly scheduled game with Wethersfield and a make-up game with Lewis Mills on Tuesday, and the Lancers came away with a split.

Wethersfield 7 – Eastern 2

On Monday night, Eastern was defeated by Wethersfield for the second time this season, as they dropped a 7-2 decision in a game played at Muzzy Field.  Wethersfield improved their record to 12-5, while Eastern fell to 6-10.

Wethersfield jumped on Eastern starter Jonny Montgomery early, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, following a double by leadoff hitter Cooper Farrelly, a walk, and a two-run single by Justin Bagdasarian.  They added a run in the top of the third on two bloop singles and led 3-0.

Eastern scored a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-1. It began with a walk to lead-off hitter Gabe White, who promptly stole second, went to third on a balk, and scored on a groundout.  

Eastern managed only three singles over the first 5 & 2/3 innings off Wethersfield starter Jonathan Cunningham, but Cunningham was taken out with two outs in the sixth after reaching his pitch count.

Wethersfield, meanwhile, collected eleven hits off Montgomery. They added an unearned run in the fifth, and then scored three additional runs in the sixth on three hits and two walks off Montgomery, and finishing his day on the mound.  Noah Molinsky took over in the sixth and pitched the final 1.1 innings.

Eastern scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.  Caleb Molinsky and Ben D’Amato singled, and Owen Myers’ infield single scored Molinsky with the Lancers second run of the game.

Eastern finished the game with six hits, all singles, including two by Rio Fernandez.

Eastern 20- Lewis Mills 9

Bristol Eastern exploded for twenty hits and twenty runs as they defeated Lewis Mills 20-9 on Tuesday afternoon in a game played at Mills that was called at the end of five innings because of the mercy rule..  

Both teams have identical 7-10 records at this time, with three games remaining to be played.

The Lancers’ Ben D’Amato had a perfect day at the plate, collecting two singles, a home run and two walks, scored three times, and drove in four runs.  

Mason Harris had a single, double, and triple, driving in five runs.  Rio Fernandez collected two doubles and a single, good for three rbi’s.  

Gabe White had three hits, while Owen Myers, Preston Guarda, and Caleb Molinsky each had two hits.  All the starters in the batting order had at least one hit.

Eastern scored four runs in the top of the first, highlighted by Fernandez’s two run double.  

Mills scored a run in the bottom of the inning, and then knocked out Eastern starter Anthony Nocera with a six-run second inning, taking a 7-4 lead. Mills’ Tim Maldonado’s three-run homer finished Nocera’s day.  Declan Schenck got the final out in the second, and pitched the final three innings to pick up the win.

Eastern scored five runs in the third inning to take a 9-7 lead, and then sent 13 batters to the plate in a nine run fourth inning, the lead now standing at 18-7.  Harris had a three- run triple,highlighting the fourth inning scoring.

After Mills scored two in the fourth to cut the lead to 18-9, D’Amato hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth for the final Eastern runs.  Schenck set down the Spartans in order in the fifth to seal the win. 

For Lewis Mils, in addition to Maldonado’s home run, Matt Chirumbolo had two singles, scored three runs, and drove in two.
