“Driving Madeleine,” (2022) PG-13, will be shown Thursday, Aug. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Bristol Public Library. In the film, Madeleine, leaves small suburban to join a nursing home, on the other side of Paris. Charles, a taxi driver, comes to pick her up. In no hurry to reach her destination, she asks the driver to go visit areas of the capital, which have counted in her life. French with English sub-titles. No charge.

City Hall and Public Works closed Monday, Labor Day
City offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 2, in observances of Labor Day.
There will be no curbside collections, rubbish nor recycling, on Monday. Curbside collections will be delayed by one day, with Friday routes being completed on Saturday.
1st Annual Brian McCutcheon Memorial Shootout benefits cancer alliance
The 1st Annual Brian McCutcheon Memorial Shootout, benefiting the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, will be held Monday, Oct. 21, at Great River Golf Club in Milford.
A little less than a year ago, on Nov. 3, McCutcheon, a Bristol native, passed. The family, in announcing the event, hopes to channel their heartache “into positivity and ultimately see improvements in colorectal cancer treatment.
“Doing this,” the literature states, “will ensure the beauty of Brian’s life carries forward, both in our memories and out across the greater world.”
The event features a buffet lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Costs for individuals, $300; foursomes, $1,200; no golf cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, $80.

University of Hartford offers lifelong learning opportunities
The Presidents’ College Lifelong Learning program at the University of Hartford will kick off its fall class with an kickoff on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Event is free but you do need to register. Full details at hartford.edu/pc.
The program, taught by professors and community experts, offers lectures and short, two to four, non-credit courses on topics like impressionist art, the Supreme Court, artificial intelligence and medicine, film, supersonic flight, jazz, politics and history.
The program is open to all ages. There is no membership fee, but there is a modest fee.
The Sept. 18 event includes refreshments and jazz plus and information about upcoming fall courses and lectures from professors.
‘Whiskey for Warriors’ fundraiser set for early September has been cancelled
The Third Annual Whiskey for Warriors Fundraiser, hosted by Veterans Strong Community Center, set for Saturday, Sept. 7, at DoubleTree by Hilton on Century Drive, has been cancelled after slow ticket sales.
Veterans Strong Community Center provides resources for active-duty service members, veterans and their immediate families regardless of branch, time of service or discharge status. The center served 226 new clients in 2023 with over 8,000 interactions.
Each year Veterans Strong provides holiday gifts to over 100 veterans and spouses in skilled nursing facilities in the greater Bristol area, which includes Bristol, Burlington, Harwinton, Plymouth, Thomaston and Wolcott through its Secret Santa program.
American Clock & Watch Museum’s ‘Wine, Women and Watches’ tickets on sale

NAACP’s Annual Freedom Fund Banquet tickets on sale
The West Hartford Chief of Police Vernon Reddick and recently retired Bristol Chief of Police Brian Gould will be keynote speakers and honorees, respectively, at this year’s Greater Bristol chapter of the NAACP’s Annual Freedom Fund Banquet.
The theme of this year’s event is “Preparing Challenges,” and the event will be held Friday, Oct. 25, at Testa’s Banquet Facility in Southington, with social beginning at 6 p.m. and the banquet, at 7 p.m. Tickets are for adults, $85, and for youth, $50.

Wheeler sets date for 39th Annual Golf Classic
Wheeler’s 39th Annual Golf Classic will take place at The Country Club of Farmington on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Registration is open, and sponsors, players and prize donors are invited to join those who have already signed up.
Proceeds will benefit Wheeler’s Basic Needs fund, which his 100 percent donor supported and has served more than 8,500 patients, according to the release.

Bristol Veterans Council continues to raise funds for POW/MIA monument
The Bristol Veterans Council continues to raise funds for a POW/MIA monument as part of contingency in the event that monument needs to be repaired or maintained beyond its agreement with Bristol Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services.
The six-foot high, 10-inch thick and three-feet wide gray granite monument honors each branch of the military. It was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, this year in ceremonies on Memorial Boulevard.
