‘Love of Art’ fund continues legacy of Louise Lauretano DeMars

The inaugural cycle of the Louise Lauretano DeMars Love of Art Fund will open Oct. 1, it was announced by the Main Street Community Foundation yesterday.

“In speaking with Louise prior to her death in early 2023, it was clear she wanted to assist artists with furthering their creativity, exploring their talent, and expanding their learning and we are honored to begin accepting applications.” said Susan D. Sadecki, MSCF president and chief executive officer, in the release.

The grant cycle will run from Oct. 1 through Oct. 25. Established artists with an active art practice residing, for a minimum of two years, in Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington or Wolcott are eligible. Applications are available on the MSCF website: https://www.mainstreetfoundation.org/.

“The people who establish funds at our Foundation are very special and Louise Lauretano DeMars is no exception,” Sadecki said. “She was a trailblazer in our community and always had an eye for the beauty of art.”

Sadeski noted that DeMars was the curator of many award-winning exhibits in museums across Connecticut, such as the Peabody Museum of Natural History and the Carousel Museum.

“Louise was always enriching the lives of everyone around her,” Sadeski said. “The over $1 million bequest she left for our Foundation to steward shows her love and continued desire to promote art through support for individual artists in the Bristol-area.”

Initial awards will range from $1,000 to $5,000 with one or more grants awarded in this inaugural year.

Approved uses of the funds may include:

  • purchase of materials,
  • equipment or supplies;
  • compensation for time spent developing a project or creating art;
  • hiring others related to the project;
  • ttending workshops, conferences and residencies;
  • performance or touring costs; travel and related costs relevant to proposal; rental of work/studio space;
  • production costs such as costumes, props, lighting or sound systems; or
  • other items necessary for development as an artist.

The award notifications for this grant cycle are expected by Nov. 30.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
