Plainville scores with seconds remaining to pin 1-0 loss on Bristol Eastern in boys soccer

Plainville (6-2) defeated Bristol Eastern (1-5-2) ,1-0, Thursday afternoon, scoring a late goal to secure the victory.

In a tale of two halves, the Lancers had more of the play in the first half, but were frustrated by the Plainville defense in the final third of the field.

“We defended well, allowing just one shot, and got the ball near the Plainville goal, but failed to put in a good shot.” said Lancer coach Bill Sweet. “Our inability to finish has plagued us all year.”

In the second half, Plainville gained more of the play, using sharp passes to get near the Lancer goal.  They were unable to score as the Eastern goalie, Connor Murtaugh, made two good saves and Lancer backs shut off passing lanes in the final third.

However, with 25 seconds to go in the game, the Lancers took a corner kick that was headed directly to Plainville goalie Ian Bravado. He quickly got the ball out to Mario Cruz who passed to a speedy Cole Jones on the right side.  Jones took the ball over half field, raced down the right side, and hit a hard shot past Murtaugh with 18 seconds left on the clock.

Bravado had four saves on the day and Murtaugh made 5.

Eastern next travels to Maloney for a 3:45 p.m. game on Monday.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
