The Bristol Park System is one of 54 across the country to receive substantial funding through a National Park System grant.

“I am pleased to announce that the City of Bristol Department of Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services has been selected for funding for the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) grant for $1,930,000 for Rockwell Park Revitalization,” BPRYCS superintendent Josh Medeiros announced recently.

The ORLP program is part of President Biden’s “America the Beautiful Initiative, which fosters locally led, voluntary conservation and restoration efforts to improve access to the outdoors with a focus on remedying crises with nature and the climate crisis, according to a U.S. Department of the Interior release announcing the awards.

“This was an extremely competitive process with the National Park Service receiving 67 eligible proposals from states across the country with over $303 million in federal grant funding requested,” Medeiros said.

A total of almost $255 million was awarded to 54 projects in 24 states. A focus of the projects six determining factors was “providing safe outdoor space for communities that are park-deprived,” according to the interior department’s release.

The matching grant in Bristol will go towards renovating the Rockwell splash park, playground, pool bathhouse, disc golf course and basketball courts as well as provide American Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades to the trail and Fraser Little League Field, Medeiros said.

“This will be another transformative revitalization project that will benefit Bristol residents and future generations to come,” Medeiros said
