Independent candidate Mary “Mim” Rydingsward is challenging incumbent Republican Cara Pavalock-D’Amato for the 77th district state representative seat.
“I support policies that bring us together, create resiliency, improve the middle-class quality of life, and keep profits in our local economy,” the longtime community activist and former Registrar of Voters said in the press release announcing her candidacy. “It is time for a positive change.”
Rydingsward, also in the release, labeled her opponent as “a MAGA loyalist,” who supports “policies that sow hatred and sour our community.”
“Our democracy is under threat, and we must come together to protect it and safeguard
our basic freedoms,” she said.
Rydingsward has been endorsed by Connecticut’s Independent Party and the CT Working Families Party as well as the American federation of Teachers.
Among her priorities will be quality healthcare that is affordable and accessible, and affordable rents and manageable housing costs that “improve life for working families and the middle class.”
“I will advocate for resilient programs that invest in improving the health of our community, improve
technical and building trade job opportunities, and lower property taxes,” she said in the release.
Rydingsward brings more than 25 years’ experience with government budgeting, finance and
program planning with her to the campaign trail.
During her 35 years in Bristol, she has volunteered with many civic organizations from the Ivy Drive PTO to the Kern Park Association to the League of Women Voters.
Most recently, for eight years, Rydingsward served as president of the Pequabuck River Watershed Association, during which time she became well-aware of the resources and problems that confront the residents of the 77th, especially flooding and stormwater management issues, according to the release.
