The Bristol City Council will meet in a special session today to discuss a crucial opportunity to protect nearly nine acres of land adjacent to Hopper’s Open Space.

The land, located on Perkins Street, has been the subject of significant public debate, as the developers behind a proposed 16-home subdivision have given the city a final chance to purchase the property and preserve it as open space.

The lot in question, consisting of Lot 12-5 and Lot 11 R, totals 8.7 acres and is located next to the well-loved Hopper’s Open Space, a recreational area beloved by local residents for recreational activities and its ecological value. The developers, New Britain-based P&B Properties, had previously submitted an application to begin the process of developing the land into a residential subdivision.

After facing strong opposition from community members who want to see the land preserved, P&B Properties withdrew a wetlands application earlier this year that would have moved the project forward.

The special City Council Meeting will be held today at 6:00 p.m. in Meeting Room 3-1, Third Floor at City Hall, located at 111 North Main Street.
