On December 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, the American Legion, Post 2, will hold a special ceremony to honor all World War II veterans, with a focus on those who served during the historic attack on Pearl Harbor. The event will take place at 11 a.m. at the flagpole in front of Post 2, located at 22 Hooker Ct. in Bristol, at the exact time the attack occurred more than 80 years ago.
“On hand will be two long time members of Post 2,” said Neal Supranovich, historian with American Legion Post 2 “Joe Caminiti, last known Iwo Jima Survivor in Ct. Along with him will be Dick Fitz, Navy Armed Guard.”
The ceremony will be a solemn tribute to the sacrifices made by veterans of World War II. Among those in attendance will be two distinguished members of Post 2: Joe Caminiti, the last known Iwo Jima survivor in Connecticut, and Dick Fitz, a Navy Armed Guard who made 11 perilous trips across the Atlantic during the war.
During the ceremony, Fitz will lead the gathering in a prayer that he recited while at sea. Additionally, the names of the 19 Connecticut residents who lost their lives in the Pearl Harbor attack will be read aloud. The ceremony will include the ringing of the bell, the playing of “Taps” and a brief but meaningful reflection on the sacrifices made by those who served.
The public is invited to attend and join in this important remembrance. The event is expected to be brief but will serve as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who served during World War II.
