Bristol Eastern drew a tough match-up for the first game of the season Friday night. They gave highly-regarded Northwest Catholic all they could handle for three periods, but could not finish the job in the final quarter.
Northwest went on a 15-0 run to begin the fourth period, breaking open a close contest. They went on to post a 54-37 win over Bristol Eastern in the season opener for both teams.
NWC led 15-6 after the first period. BE answered with an 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the second quarter. The Lancer’s run was fueled by two hoops from Leah Roy (a 2 and a 3), and a three pointer from Cassie Sward. This cut the Northwest lead to 15-14. The game remained close thereafter until early in the fourth period.
Autumn Udoh opened the fourth with a basket to give the Lancers their final lead of the game at 35-34. But then Northwest made a 15 point push. Abigail Casper, Samantha Casper, and Lily Johnson each made a three-point hoop on three consecutive possessions. NWC cruised to the victory from there.
Udoh led the Lancers with 20 points. Leah Roy had 5, and Amanda Noel added 4 to the BE cause.
Abigail Casper led Northwest with 15 points, followed by Zoey Canning with 12.
