Bristol Tax Collector Ann Bednaz announced this week that the second installment of real estate and personal property taxes for the Grand List of October 1, 2023, are due January 1, 2025. All tax bills become delinquent after February 3, 2025.
Taxpayers are reminded to check their July tax bills for the second installment coupon, which must be used to submit the January payment. The Tax Collector’s Office does not issue rebills for second installments.
Motor Vehicle Tax Notices
Owners of motor vehicles registered between October 2, 2023, and July 31, 2024, will also receive tax bills for the City’s Supplemental 2023 Motor Vehicle Grand List. These bills will be mailed on December 31, 2024, and are due on January 1, 2025. Payments for motor vehicle taxes are also delinquent after February 3, 2025.
Payment Options
To make payments in person, taxpayers may visit any M&T Bank branch from January 2 through February 3, 2025, using their current tax coupon. Payments can be made by cash or check, and there is no fee for this service. Payments may be made at any M&T Bank branch, regardless of location.
At the Tax Office, located at 111 North Main Street, City Hall, payments may be made in person by check or cash. Credit cards are not accepted at the counter. Tax Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
For those looking to avoid long lines, payments can also be mailed to the Tax Collector’s Office at P.O. Box 1040, Bristol, CT 06011-1040. A self-addressed stamped envelope must be included if a receipt is desired.
Delinquency and Interest Charges
Payments must be received or postmarked on or before February 3, 2025, to avoid delinquency. Late payments are subject to an interest charge of 1.5% per month, starting from the due date of January 1, 2025. The minimum interest charge is $2.00, in accordance with Connecticut State Statute Sec. 12-146.
It is important to note that failure to receive a tax bill will not invalidate the tax or the interest penalty, nor will it prevent the filing of a real estate lien on delinquent properties. Additionally, unpaid personal property taxes, such as those on business equipment, will result in UCC liens filed with the Secretary of State. Delinquent motor vehicle taxes will be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), potentially preventing the registration or renewal of vehicles.
Collection Enforcement
In accordance with state law, if taxes are not paid by the deadline, the Tax Collector is required to initiate collection enforcement measures.
