The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) is reminding pet owners to prioritize their pets’ safety and health during the winter holidays. As families gather for the season, many will include their pets in the festivities, but it’s essential to be proactive about potential hazards.
Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt highlighted the importance of being prepared for both holiday-related dangers and cold weather conditions.
Being proactive about potential hazards can ensure your pet’s safety and prevent the need for an emergency visit to the veterinary clinic,” said Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt. “Additionally, it’s crucial to be aware of cold weather conditions, as they can pose a risk to pets as well.”
The department encourages pet owners to follow these seven key tips for ensuring their pets remain safe and comfortable:
1. Plan in Advance
- Ensure pets have up-to-date identification and microchips.
- Keep emergency contact information, including a 24/7 veterinary clinic and the Animal Poison Control Helpline (888-426-4435), easily accessible.
- Confirm that commercial kennels are licensed if your pet will be boarded during travel.
2. Beware of Toxic Foods
- Keep harmful foods like onions, garlic, grapes, chocolate, and alcohol out of pets’ reach. These common holiday items are toxic to animals.
3. Mind the Festive Plants and Decorations
- Poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are toxic to pets. Be mindful of holiday plants and ensure that decorations, including ornaments and lights, are safe and out of reach.
4. Keep Pets Safe from Cold Weather
- Recognize your pet’s cold tolerance and avoid long exposure to freezing temperatures.
- Consider warm clothing for pets, such as coats or sweaters, and check paws for damage after outdoor walks.
5. Provide Quiet Spaces for Pets
- Holiday noise can be overwhelming for pets. Set up a calm, quiet space where your pet can retreat from the festivities.
6. Monitor Holiday Gift Packaging & Presents
- Avoid letting pets play with ribbons, wrapping paper, or small packaging items that could be harmful if ingested. Provide pet-safe toys or treats as alternatives.
7. Check for Winter Hazards Outdoors
- Be cautious of icy sidewalks and avoid frozen lakes or ponds to protect pets from slipping or falling into freezing water. Short-haired pets may also be more susceptible to frostbite.
“By taking these precautions, you can help ensure your pets stay safe and comfortable throughout the holiday season and winter months,” said State Veterinarian Thamus Morgan, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “All animals should be current on vaccinations and if additional medications are needed to combat stress and anxiety, consult with your veterinarian on a course of action to make the holidays enjoyable for all.”
