On Thursday night, the Bristol Eastern Lancers went up against the Windsor Warriors in their home gym. The final score of 40-31 was a big win for the Lancers.
In the first quarter, the Lancers kept Windsor scoreless with tight defense. Jayle Evins-Mosley, in her first varsity start, gave Eastern a 2-0 lead when she scored a hoop down low, and added a second hoop minutes later. After one period, it was 8-0, Eastern
In the second period, the Lancers kept their defensive pressure going. Windsor struggled to score. They didn’t make a basket until the 5:50 mark of the second quarter. Zoe Mercado, who was Windsor’s high scorer with 14 points, made a driving lay-up.
Cassie Sward contributed with 12 points leading the Lancers to an 18-6 lead over the first half. Two second quarter hoops from Leah Roy, coupled with the tenacious defense, contributed to the Lancer’s advantage.
Eastern shot 8-for-21 from the field in the half (38%), while Windsor connected on only 3-of-31 from the field (10%). Eastern made nine steals in the half, but was guilty of 14 turnovers.
In the second half, Eastern maintained its lead throughout, getting key minutes from Emily Zurowski, and key rebounding and defense from Roy and Amanda Noel.
In the third quarter, the Warriors tried to make a comeback. But the Lancers kept fighting and ended the third leading by a score of 32-24.
In the fourth, a key offensive rebound and put-back by Evins-Mosley and a three from Sward led to the 40-31 victory.
Sward finished with 12 points, Autumn Udoh had 11, and Evins-Mosley and Roy added six each. Amanda Noel contributed with some big rebounds and blocks throughout the game. Natalia Vye and Emily Zurowski played essential minutes to help the Lancers lead to a victory.
Bristol Eastern’s record is now 3-3 and Windsor is 3-2.
The Lancers are looking for another win against Waterbury Career Academy on January, 7 at 6:30 at Bristol Eastern.
