75 years ago Jan 12 – Jan 19, 1949

Charles Pendlebury, secretary-treasurer of Veeder-Root, Inc., today branded as an “idle rumor” a report being circulated in Bristol that the corporations Bristol plant is being sold. According to the report, that plant was to be sold to a firm in Ansonia which is engaged in the manufacture of toys. Judge Frederick W. Beach, president of the Chamber of Commerce, this morning confirmed that the Chamber has for some time has been contacting potential buyers for Veeder-Root plant here.

A film on “Human Growth” will be shown at a meeting of the Beth Israel Sisterhood January 17 at 8:30pm at the Synagogue. The film, which was made in color at the University of Oregon, is highly recommended as an instructive and educational film.

Entries of Walter T. Dexter of Forestville will compete for championship honors in the 102nd Boston Poultry Show at the Mechanics Building, Jan 18-22, according to Paul Ives, show chairman. More than 5,000 birds from 25 states will vie for cash prizes during the five day run of the nation’s oldest and largest poultry exposition.

Ted Brennan, co-captain of Bristol High School’s classy basketball team established a new school record with 42 points in a 79-44 win over William Hall High School of West Hartford before 1,200 awed onlookers at the State Armory.

Bristol Police officers Lawrence Rajotte and Emile Raboin responded to calls about a howling dog with its head stuck in the incinerator at the rear of the home of Margaret Kuczymarski on Willis Street. They discovered the dog with his head stuck in a large round hole incinerator and unable to pry himself loose. A bone thrown into the incinerator had attracted the animal. After being released by the officers, the dog ran off about 20 feet, looked around as if to say thank you, and then scampered away.

The Bristol Bank and Trust Company is observing the 75th anniversary of its founding this year Charles T. Treadway Jr., president, pointed out at the annual meeting of stockholders on Tuesday, January 17. Some special recognition of the May 3rd anniversary will be taken a later date.
